473 mL can dated Aug 25 2020 and served slightly chilled. One of six beers I picked up while stopping by the brew house in Sarnia.
Pours clear and effervescent; its pale straw yellow-hued body is topped with nearly three fingers of soapy, foamy white head that recedes within five minutes or so. A frothy collar and cap remain in place, with a fair bit of lace flung about in the process; looks good so far. Coffee on the nose, alongside some grainy, doughy malts and an earthy, herbal, dirty hop note; kind of a canned pea vibe going on, too.
The flavours are along the same lines - gritty, grainy pale malts and a touch of doughy sweetness at the front end, together with coffee grounds; these flavours last throughout the sip, joined towards the finish by an earthy, herbal, grassy hop note that lingers into the aftertaste along with the coffee grounds. Light-medium in body, with moderately lively carbonation that briskly prickles the tongue and froths up on the palate, resulting in a crisp, relatively refreshing mouthfeel. Excellent drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. This was my first sampling of an Imperial City brew, and it made for a pleasant introduction - it says Coffee Blonde on the label, and that's exactly what it delivers, so there's not much to complain about here. The base beer is nothing to write home about, nor is the coffee infusion all that thorough/intense, but somehow the final result is more than the sum of its parts, and appealing enough to be worth revisiting. Give it a try if you're in the area.
