473 mL can from the brewery; dated Oct 20 2020 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear orange-copper colour, topped with an inch of foamy, creamy, off-white head that melts away within two minutes' time. It leaves behind a narrow band of even lace as it is reduced to a tight collar and thin, filmy cap - looks good to me, but I positively love the spiciness of the aroma. Clove, nutmeg and cinnamon result in an almost root beer-like vibe, layered atop notes of pumpkin pie filling, caramelized sugars, ginger ale and pumpkin bread.
It's pretty tasty - the spice was a bit much at first, but my taste buds soon adjusted, at which point it became a much more enjoyable quaff. Cinnamon and nutmeg at the forefront, along with plenty of brown sugar cookie sweetness, leading into notes of pumpkin bread, pie filling and root beer. More syrupy sweetness towards the finish, with clove and a touch of nutmeg lingering into a saccharine, pumpkin pie-like aftertaste. Medium in body, with fairly aggressive carbonation that gives a prickly bite to its generally smooth, slightly slick mouthfeel. Fair drinkability - one can should be enough for most folks, unless you really love spiced beers.
Final Grade: 3.83, a B+. Imperial City's Pumpkin Spiced Ale is a unique example of an increasingly neglected seasonal style. I found this to be a 'bell curve' experience - at first I didn't like it much, but began to enjoy it towards the middle of the session before tiring of it nearer the end. It may be a little sweeter than I'd prefer, but that's ok if you're considering this as a dessert beer - recommended to anyone who appreciates spiced ales or pumpkin beers.
