473 mL can from the brewery; dated Nov 9 2020 and served slightly chilled. When I see 'honey brown' I generally think 'brown ale' - but this is technically a lager according to their facebook page, so amber lager seemed like the closest fit.
Pours a clear amber-orange hue, fitted with more than an inch of foamy, sudsy, off white-coloured head that dissipates within several minutes' time. A messy swath of gorgeous lacing is scattered about in the process, with a frothy collar and filmy cap remaining on the surface - looks very nice in the glass. Caramelized sugars on the nose, with notes of doughy, lightly toasted bread and honey sweetness.
A more than decent honey brown - the profile leans sweet throughout, with honey and doughy, lightly toasted bread alongside some caramelized malts; kind of a root beer vibe going on. Faint hints of earthiness towards the finish, with caramelized sugars and toasted malts lingering into a slightly sweet aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that prickle the palate gently, adding a little bit of bite to its smooth, satisfying mouthfeel. Quite drinkable - I wouldn't have minded another can, as I polished off my glass almost too quickly.
Final Grade: 3.81, a B+. I lost my beer virginity to Sleeman Honey Brown, and Imperial City's Honey Brown is more or less a better version of that Canadian classic. Yeah it's kinda sweet, but not cloyingly so, which is probably the best I can hope for out of a honey beer. Recommended for fans of honey beer or malt-forward brews in general - something I'd consider picking up again in the future.
