Tallboy can purchased at the brewery; dated Dec 6 2021 and served barely chilled.
Pours a deep, clear ruby-red amber colour, producing one finger of creamy, buff-coloured head that lasts for a couple of minutes before mostly fizzling out. Its remnants include a thin collar and a few far-flung flecks of lace, with more deposited as the level drops. Fairly saccharine and spicy on the nose - gingerbread and shortbread, with additional hints of cinnamon and root beer.
It's spicy and sweet, neither of which can be considered surprising for this style - the ginger really pops at the start, with the cinnamon taking over later on. Quite malty, with brown sugar, candied cherry and gingerbread; hints of earthy, leafy hop bitterness crop up later on, largely squeezed out by the cinnamon spiciness, honey sweetness and mild alcohol warmth of the aftertaste. Cinnamon turns out to be the longest-lasting; a persistent presence after each sip. Medium in body, with low carbonation that weakly agitates the surface of the tongue; feels smooth and slick, kind of like a soda fountain cherry cola that has been outgassing for a few hours. Not something I could drink in large quantities, but one glass is enjoyable enough.
Final Grade: 3.59, a B grade. Winter Warmers are one of those seasonal styles that seem to pass me by almost every year - I generally like 'em, but I hardly ever stumble upon new ones to try. I'm probably just not looking hard enough, as they tend to be small-batch/brewery-only deals that don't see wide retail releases. Imperial City's is a little over-spiced for my preferences, but if you paired this with food, i.e. something sweet (vs. just by itself, as I'm doing), then it might function well as a dessert beer. A serviceable strong ale for a cold, snowy Christmas Eve.
