473 mL nitro can from the brewery; dated Feb 2 2021 and served slightly chilled.
A deliberately rough pour produces a brief cascade before revealing a deep reddish bronze-coloured brew, topped with nearly two fingers of creamy, resilient, off white-tinged head. Even after ten minutes or so, a smooth, quarter-inch cap remains in place, with an even coat of lacing deposited in its wake - looks great to me, but the nose is rather subdued. I'm getting hints of bready malts, wort and faint suggestions of caramelized malts, but not much else, save for a touch of metallicity.
Approachable flavours - lightly caramelized sugars and toasted cereal grains, with some bready, biscuity notes developing by the middle of the sip. Hints of earthy, grassy hops towards the finish, with some toasted malt sweetness and nuttiness lingering into the aftertaste. Light in body - as with any nitro beer, it's silky smooth-feeling on the tongue, with a very weak bite. Very drinkable, the sort of brew that might work well as a session option next March 17th, if you're not really in the mood for a dry stout.
Final Grade: 3.6, a B grade. Imperial City's Irish Red is a more-than-decent nitro red ale, not entirely unlike Kilkenny, though I'd say this one has a slightly richer malt flavour than its Guinness-made equivalent. I wouldn't exactly go out of my way for more, but then again I'm not usually all that enthusiastic about red ales in general - or nitro ales, for that matter. At the very least, I enjoyed my two cans and I'd probably pick it up again next St. Patrick's Day.
