A sophisticated and balanced relationship between hop and malt profiles, specifically designed and brewed for those who can appreciate a true West-Coast style IPA. Boasting very bright and complex flavour profiles with exciting blends of classic and contemporary hops that produce pungent notes of citrus zest and pine in the foreground, peach, mango and malt sweetness in the background.

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Mar 23 2021 and served barely chilled.
Pours a crystal clear orange-amber colour, topped at first with nearly two fingers of puffy, foamy, off white-tinged head that settles down to a quarter-inch cap within a couple of minutes. A generous collar of frothy suds is left behind, along with a narrow ring of lacing - looks about right. Toasted bread and caramelized malt sweetness on the nose, along with muted notes of grapefruit, orange peel and herbal, earthy hops.
A serviceable west coast-style IPA with a very robust malt backbone - there's toasted bread and grains, caramelized sugars as well as notes of candied orange, grapefruit, and earthy, resiny hop; very subtle hints of something like stone fruit or mango, too. Finishes with light caramel and earthy hop bitterness that lingers for a moment or two after each sip. Medium in body, with low carbonation that weakly brushes against the palate, resulting in a very smooth, slightly slick texture. Excellent drinkability for the style - I could've gone for another right afterwards.
Final Grade: 3.81, a B+. Imperial City's West Coast IPA is a pretty decent rendition of an old-school IPA - lots of malt flavour, hints of citrus and fruit, with a moderately bitter finish. It's not the most exciting pale ale I've ever had, but if you're looking for something hop-forward yet still reasonably well balanced, it's a brew that'll be worth your time to try. I'll definitely be returning to this one at some point.
