473 mL can from the brewery; dated May 2 2023 and served barely chilled.
Pours a slightly fogged golden-amber colour, kicking up an inch of soapy, foamy white head that lasts for the better part of five minutes. It eventually wears down to a tight, creamy collar and smooth, filmy cap, with a half-inch ring of lace adhering to the glass. It smells of grains and doughy pale malt sweetness, with hints of grapefruit, floral hops and lemon peel.
It's alright - I'm tasting grainy pale malts, doughy/wheaty sweetness and corn flakes, with mild notes of grapefruit and lemon peel arising by mid-sip. It concludes with floral, weakly piney hop bitterness and a hint of spiciness; the aftertaste is grainy-sweet with suggestions of rye bread, drying off only a little. Light in body, with assertive carbonation that prickles and prods the palate continuously with each sip; feels crisp and refreshing, especially for an IPA.
Final Grade: 3.58, a B grade. Imperial City's West Coast Session IPA isn't the best session IPA I've ever sampled, but I don't have any major complaints, either. The aroma is kinda dull, and it's a little malt-forward for an IPA - though to be honest, that latter fact makes for a more balanced and satisfying session compared to many other Ontario session IPAs, at least IMO. i.e. Many session IPAs neglect the malt side of the equation in favour of a thin, 'hop tea' feel that I don't really care for. This brew doesn't do that, making it more comparable to a light APA - it'd work well as a summer patio beer.
