473 mL can from the brewery; dated Jun 23 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a relatively clear pale blonde colour, capped with one finger of loose, soapy white head that falls apart within a couple of minutes. A thin collar and some filmy wisps continue to grace the surface afterwards, with scant lace production - looks like a normal kettle sour so far. It smells a lot like a ginger beer - i.e. sweet, with candied ginger and Vernors coming to mind quickly. The raspberry is also present, but far subtler, with suggestions of grainy, wheaty pale malts and lemony citrus.
Lightly flavoured, but very refreshing: starts off tasting like ginger ale, i.e. on the saccharine side, with low heat/spiciness. Hints of grainy, wheaty malts and lemon tartness also come through; the raspberry fruitiness is most noticeable on the back end, dissipating into a mildly spicy, moderately tart finish. Lemony aftertaste that lingers momentarily before drying off. Light in body, with moderately low carbonation that adds a little bit of a bite to this sour's smooth, crisp mouthfeel. Supremely easy to knock back.
Final Grade: 3.88, a B+. Lost in the Zone Pt. 1 drinks a lot like a spiced/fruited ale - its acidity is pretty low-key, allowing the ginger and raspberry to largely run the show. This is not a balanced beer, but as someone who has LONG lamented the serious dearth of quality (alcoholic) ginger beers in this region, I am not about to complain. I liked this, would buy it again, and would recommend it to any fan of ginger beer. What would improve this beer? More ginger, of course! Can't wait to see what happens in Part 2.
