Spicy yeast and subtle notes of blueberry and coriander compliment the dry creaminess of this twist on a traditional Belgian style witbier. Dry with a slight acidic finish leads to a beer that is a touch tart yet smooth, drinkable and thirst quenching. 10 IBU

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Aug 8 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy, translucent, dull brassy-yellow hue, capped with one finger of soapy, bubbly white head that recedes within two minutes or so. A thin collar and a few wisps of film on the surface are all that remain, with scant lace production. It primarily smells of blueberry flavouring, giving the overall aroma a 'blueberry muffin' vibe that is appealing, if not completely authentic. There are also hints of wheaty, bready pale malts, coriander and peppery yeast spiciness.
Blueberry flavours are immediately discernible, with a firm dose of grainy malt and bready wheat sweetness, as well. Not a lot of development beyond that: the coriander spiciness comes in late, with hints of peppery yeast spiciness and blueberry acidity at the finish. More blueberry flavour into the aftertaste, effectively delaying the dryness for a second or two. Light in body, with moderate carbonation that gently prickles the surface of the palate, resulting in a smooth, slightly crisp mouthfeel that works well for this light, fruity wheat ale.
Final Grade: 3.62, a B grade. Imperial City's Out of the Blue is a serviceable summer session option for blueberry beer enthusiasts. For me, witbiers 'work' mostly because of the citrus peel acidity - that's what helps tie together the wheat/malt sweetness and the coriander/yeast spiciness. Don't get me wrong, blueberries are also acidic, but they're also much sweeter and thus don't substitute well into the white ale equation IMO. This is pretty good if taken as a blueberry beer, it's just not really what I want out of a witbier. To each their own: it's still refreshing and well worth a try if it piques your interest.
