473 mL can from the brewery; dated Aug 21 2023 and served slightly chilled. A variant of one of their most popular beers.
Pours a cloudy golden-amber hue, its body loaded with flecks of sediment; rising to the surface is nearly two fingers of billowing, foamy, soapy white head that lasts for the better part of ten minutes. A lumpy cap and generous collar remain, with gobs of sticky lace clinging to the glass - looks great, just like their original milkshake IPA. Peach, pineapple and orange on the nose, with subtler hints of watermelon and blueberry on closer inspection; some creamy lactose/milk sugariness is also discernible.
The watermelon comes through immediately, in a less-than-authentic juice concentrate manner - it's not overbearing, but it's what stood out to me at first. The peach is also hard to miss, with hints of orange and mango coming through as well; lactose sweetness and grainy, wheaty malts serve in a supporting role. Blueberry yogurt on the back end, with a creamy-sweet aftertaste; melon and peach flavourings linger longer than I'd prefer. Medium-full in body, with low carbonation and a generous, fulfilling mouthfeel that is smooth, soft and tongue-coating. One can was plenty for me.
Final Grade: 3.59, a B grade. Imperial City's Milkshake IPA Shakeup is different, I'll give it that. All of the fruit flavours are extract-derived, which detracts from its overall likability for me - some extracts can stand on their own just fine, but I have always found peach and watermelon flavourings to be particularly artificial-tasting. Those two might be a little over-used, but the blueberry is just about right. Overall it's a slight step down from the original mango/coconut/vanilla version IMO - keeping the vanilla might've helped this one, but it wouldn't have made the fruit flavours any more authentic.
