473 mL can from the brewery; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a deep black-brown colour with cherry red highlights, capped with nearly two fingers of soapy, foamy, light tan-coloured head. It dissipates over the next three or four minutes, trimming down to a creamy collar and thin cap; a modest band of lace can be produced with a swirl of the glass. The aroma is muted, offering up hints of dark roasted coffee grounds and burnt grain, with perhaps a faint suggestion of brown sugar and toasted nuts.
Nothing to write home about - the flavour profile is balanced, restrained and quite dry. Roasted malts, with hints of cocoa, dark chocolate, burnt grain and coffee. Faint creamy sweetness gives way to a bittersweet, roasty finish leading into a dry aftertaste that begs for another sip. Light in body, with low-ish carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel; not an exciting stout, but a passable session option that I found mostly satisfying.
Final Grade: 3.62, a B grade. Exmouth Stout is a serviceable addition to Imperial City's lineup that may be worth keeping on year-round. I suspect it might be a tweaked version of their original Irish Stout, with a better name - though I'd say Exmouth seems lighter, drier, and less rough around the edges than its antecessor. As a local brew, it's a good effort that drinks well, but I would not single this out as an especially memorable Ontario stout. Worth a shot; I'm sure I'll end up drinking it again at some point.
