Rye Lager

Rye straw has been an essential element of lager brewing for centuries. In the days before stainless steel later tuns, the mash would be poured over a bed of rye straw in a wooden tub to separate the sweet wort from the grain solids. This dry, refreshing lager is brewed from pilsner malt, 30% rye malt, and spalt hops. A single decoction with a 40 minute rösten boil makes for a smooth presentation of the bittering hops, and the high protein rye malt adds a mild sweetness and full mouthfeel to balance and compliment the late addition aroma hops. The beer is packaged with krausen for a soft, natural carbonation that will continue to develop in the bottle as time goes on.

Pours a wan brownish gold, foamy head that settles to a line. Grainy aroma and flavors. Little bit of roast, good hit of bitterness on the backend. Very dry, as advertised. Nice medium, filling mouthfeel. Very solid lager with a slight flavor twist from the rye.

Notes via stream of consciousness: I'm not sure what the name means but I'm pretty sure it's German for rye grass, or more specifically straw. It's poured a hazy amber in color beneath a thumb's width of white foam. The aroma is clean, grainy, and grassy but not sweet. If you're familiar with rye you'll say it smells like rye. On to the taste... it's very much like the aroma. It's lightly sweet, bready, grainy, subtly spicy, and grassy. You might be able to pick out some herbal hops but that's it. It's not complex but the rye does make it different than a standard golden lager, and it remains refreshing and interesting. It's moderately bitter and dry in the finish with spiciness lingering. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation. So what do I think of this as a whole? It's a good beer. It's well made, and if your a fan of rye that's a bonus. The head retention and lacing could have been better but it was still very good. The aroma is clean and pleasant, and can hardly be faulted, but it's nothing special, and to a certain extent the flavor follows. The mouthfeel stands out as a high point for me, and it reminds me of a well-done kellerbier. I'm all for doing basic styles and this one covers that. Nicely done!

Hazed gold with a very thin white head that has surprisingly decent retention and OK lacing.

Strong hay, rye spiciness and a hint of mint in the nose.

Crisp with nice, floral hop brightness. Dry, bitter, slightly ashy finish.

Light to medium bodied with strong carbonation.

Another excellent lager. Very fun to try.
