7% - West Coast IPA - Named for a shortcut on the Oregon trail. We brewed this IPA from straight US grown pilsner malt. Hopped assertively in the kettle and whirlpool with columbus and centennial, then double dry hopped with columbus, centennial, simcoe and nelson sauvin. Big tropical and dank aromas smeared over a cracker dry base, and just enough IBU to touch on the glory days of WCIPA.

We all know HR crushes the lager game. But WC IPAs? Holy hell did they knock this out of the park. Seems they took diligent notes from North Park. Robot Fu was amazing. This, I like even more. So hard to find a great WC IPA made on the East Coast. But they’ve figured it out. Cannot wait to try their next offering! In the meanwhile, I’m filling my fridge with this.

Notes via stream of consciousness: Oh boy! When I cracked the can open it shot out and I got some on my fingers giving me a preview of what's to come, and believe me, it's good. A thumb's width of white foam rests gently atop a mostly clear golden body. The aroma is fruity with sweet tropical fruits and berries, hop resins, and soft pine. The taste is much fuller and there's so much berry flavor there from the Simcoe that I thought it was Mosaic at first. What are the other hops? They're Columbus, Centennial, and Nelson Suavin. I don't particularly get anything specific from the C-hops but I am finding a little bit of gooseberry from the Nelson Sauvin. Beyond that I'm getting earthiness, peach, apricot, passionfruit, and tangerine. It's bright and lively, and the sweetness of the malt amps up the fruity notes. A solid bitterness anchors it though and it doesn't get away. It finishes dry with the bitterness lingering alongside some earthiness and fading fruit but in the end it's just the bitterness that's left behind. It's medium in body and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation that warms to become soft and smooth. On that note the head retention and lacing could be better but I think the trade-off for the softer mouthfeel is worth it. All said and done this is an exceptional IPA.
