Jake was a black Labrador retriever owned by the master carpenter responsible for much of the beautiful restoration work visible in the Long Valley Pub and Brewery. Jake became familiar to the brewer as the dog lounged around the construction site during the hot, 1995 summer days while the dilapidated stone barn was meticulously restored. The friendship struck between the brewer and dog inspired the name of this beer. Lazy Jake Porter is a robust, black beer. Blends of five varieties of malted barley combine to give this beer its assertive flavor and full body. Generous late hop additions complete its bold character. Lazy Jake Porter has received three awards at The Great American Beer Festival and one award from the World Beer Cup.

LVBP lazy jake porter. Pours dark black with creamy tan foam. Light roasted coffee nose. Smooth. Some cola flavors in there too. Good porter. 4 35 375 35 35

On-tap at Long Valley Pub & Brewery, Long Valley, NJ

A: The beer is almost black in color—traces of dark amber are visible near the edge of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface, a collar around the edge, and lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of roasted malts and cola are present in the nose.
T: The taste mostly follows the smell and has a bit of initial malty sweetness and a light amount of bitterness towards the finish.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer isn't a bad porter but didn't have much in the way of hops and could have passed as an English Porter.
