an uninspiring pint here, kind of sloppy as these go, seems more amateurish than the beers i had when i visited the brewery last year, not sure what the deal is with this. shiny reddish brown in the glass, a little thick looking, but also with some apparent cloudiness, unexpected in the style, makes it look unrefined, and the head from the tap is short lived. the nose is sweet but also sort of umami, not tangy, but like peculiar in a way that suggests something is a bit odd about the ferment, its english in a way too, nutty in the middle to me, brown sugar and maple notes, autumnal, but off a little. the flavor is really sweet to me, which is not a feature i want in this style, and its immediately kind of stuck to my teeth. chocolate notes from the malt sure, but also a sort of soy vibe, a hint of licorice, black tea, and raisin, its got a lot of flavor, but im not sure how much i like what i am tasting. the yeast aspect is a bit of a miss for me, and there is some slight astringency with the residual sugar at the end of each sip once it comes up to temperature. its under carbonated too, and feels a little strange in my belly. not my favorite from these guys, identifiable, but not objectively all that good.
