Looks exactly as I remember the Roggens of Bamberg from what seems like a trip from an eternity ago. Straddling the lines of burnt orange and chocolate hazelnut brown, clouded like a proper hefe-styled brew, and a silky, off white lacey foam.
Coffee and smoke, courtesy of coffee and smoked malts, give off a glorious aroma. No competition between the two, and quite refined. A little peppery spice and earthiness mask a deeply rooted and sweet roggenbrot base.
The flavor is well integrated and balanced between the elements. The smoke and coffee are once again the frontrunners. As they are slowly overcome by a gritty and grainy spice, a smooth herbal blend welcomes in the finale of a yeasty, bready, and a hint of bubblegum sweet finish.
It's smooth, balanced, silky and soft. Almost no bitterness, but the slightly smokey touch steps up to the challenge. Remarkably easy to drink.
I would drink this by the truckload. Having said that, I could have done without the coffee. The smoke and spicy rye are more than enough to please the senses and any adventurous beer spirited individual willing to take the trek. Damn, I love roggenbiers.
Prost!
