Our latest sour ipa offering is a riff on blueberry pie. We took our sour IPA base recipe of Pilsner, raw wheat, and malted oats, then mashed it with over 100 pounds of graham cracker meal. Hopped with Mosaic and Enigma, this beer was fermented with heaps of blueberry purée and conditioned in Madagascar vanilla beans and even more graham cracker.

The low pH coupled with the refreshing tartness of blueberry gives this one a bright spritzy acidity to balance the decadence of the lactose, vanilla, and graham.

Once again, I should study labels more carefully when I buy beer. This one was not a major disaster like the Milkshake IPA abominations I have purchased by accident. Yet I was surprised when pouring what I thought was an IPA and finding a reddish pink beer with a light pink head!!!! There is room for creating new IPA styles - Cold IPA comes to mind. But we don't need a "fruited sour IPA" style!!!! This beer is really a Kettle Sour. In any case, it was not bad. The body was hazy, and the head was bubbly with average to lesser than average retention. Only tiny specks of lacing on the glass. Aroma and taste included moderate sourness, lots of blueberry and biscuity malt (probably the graham crackers). Overall, slightly sweet. Mouthfeel was light, well carbonated and juicy. The sourness was just right for a light dessert beer. Not something I would seek out again, but not bad either.

A: The beer is hazy purple in color. It poured with a short pink colored head that quickly died down, leaving a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of vanilla are present in teh nose along with notes of blueberries.
T: The taste follows the smell and has contrasting notes of sourness and sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and has a yogurt-like creaminess along with hints of tartness.
O: This beer has a nice balance between sourness and sweetness and could make for a nice dessert offering.

This one pours a dark pinkish color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like like tart blueberry, vanilla, a bit of spice, and lemon.

I wish I got a bit more of the graham cracker here, it's mostly sour blueberry with a semi-astringent lemony bitterness. I'd also want a bit more vanilla - it kind of just feels a little bit flat.

This is light bodied, slightly creamy, with a semi-astringent finish.

This isn't the best that I've had from Drowned Lands so far. I prefer their IPAs and more "traditional" beers.

Decanted from a 16 oz (473 ml) can into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint; the production date, assuming that's what those wavy lines are, is illegible.
A: Pours a cloudy, almost murky, dark rose pink color (looks like pink grapefruit) with a nearly one finger, subtly pink head, solid retention and effervescence to feed it, and rather spotty bits of near lacing.
S: Tart to the nose, but pleasantly so. Aromas fruity at first (cranberry and blueberry) giving rise to more of a chaff and barley fragrance.
T: Fairly dry and quite tart (mouth puckeringly so at first). Flavors of cranberry and darker berries (blueberry, maybe currant) dominate.
M: Medium bodied with solid effervescence.
O: Really an American Wild Ale more than an IPA (IMHO), but also really enjoyable for those who like kettle sours. Enjoyed it immensely.
