Ten Acres: Coffee (9%) pastry stout. The main conditioning property of course being coffee from our friends across the Hudson, Big Mouth Coffee of Beacon, NY, a premium roaster of fine coffee that we at Drowned Lands have become big fans of. We’ve also let the beer rest upon fresh vanilla bean, a bit of cinnamon as well as some milk sugar to give this hair bender of a beer a full bodied coffee taste and feel. It’s all at once decant, delicious and deep in flavors of a perfectly pulled espresso with just the right amount of toffee cream.

A no frills, strong stout!!! Poured from a 16 oz can into a USAF Academy snifter, this beer features a dense, black color with no light coming through. The head is dark brown, bubbly and only lasts for a minute or so. No real lacing on the glass. Aroma and taste feature rich, bready malt and lots of coffee. There is a slight coffee bitterness and a touch of milk chocolate. Mouthfeel is rich and creamy. A touch of coffee bitterness and a little warming alcohol presence but, overall, i goes down really smooth. I had it with a broiled lamb chop dinner and enjoyed it very much

It’s been a bit since I’ve had anything from Drowned Lands. This one sounds good right now, just a simple coffee Imperial Stout. Coffee beinf the sole adjunct in a beer is a rarity these days, so I’m excited for this one. Let’s crack it open and see what it’s all about
Pours a very dark brown with 2 fingers of creamy tan head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing
The nose is definitely coffee forward, maybe even a bit acidic but I dig it. I’m picking up on aromas of dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, cherry, burnt caramel, dark toast, vanilla bean, and light molasses
It’s pretty similar in taste, bringing a balance of roasty bitterness and sweetness. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting medium roast coffee, vanilla bean, dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla bean, brown sugar, dark toast, black cherry, and light molasses. The swallow brings notes of dark roast coffee, burnt caramel, dark toast, charred malt, vanilla bean, black cherry, and molasses
A medium body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a roasty beer. Finishes bone dry and quite bitter
This one is damn solid. It’s nothing special but good for what it is

In the hands of a lesser brewer this would be another middling adjunct laden pastry stout. The deft brewers of Drowned Lands elevate this beer into a much more drinkable realm (for me); a bit of bitter roastiness from the coffee cuts the ample sweetness on the palate and the relative leanness of abv and body (which is full enough but just medium weight rather than full sticky and sludgy) brings you back for another sip. Unlike many beers of this style it isn’t a chore to drink.
