At 6.6% ABV and 77 IBU's, this IPA comes out shooting using Nelson Sauvin and El Dorado hops for the bittering additions and reloading with Cashmere for the aroma and dry hoppage.

On tap at The Brazos Landing Restaurant in Waco TX.

Aroma of very strong pine and lemon.

Taste of the Nelson Sauvin comes through. A dry, drawing bitterness. Point, malt and lemon zest playing around here!

There is a lot going on with this one! Very good!

With a glimpse into the world of newer hops but an old school bitter mindset, Southern Roots splits the difference in a beer that's not quite a gunfight for the tastebuds.

But that's what they named the IPA anyway. Gunfighter kicks off with a golden, honey amber hue and a frothy off-white cap that displays all the citrusy, vinous, candied fruit and tropical flavors that come with Nelson Sauvin, Cashmere and El Dorado hops. Early flavors of honey, mild caramel and a hint of toasted granola frame a mild malty upstart before the hops pile upon.

And then they do just that with impressions of orange, pinepaple, passionfruit and papaya before rolling on the taste of white grape, coconut and apricot. But as the malts retreat, the fruity flavors trend bitter and snappy with fresh herbs, grasses, cedar and spruce in a drying late palate.

Medium bodied and trending dry, crisp and refreshing, the ale shows its subtleties as the hops are all complementary hops but rarely can carry a taste on their own. Southern Roots shows the promise of these hops in a tasty and thirst quenching finish.

I purchased this can warm at Total Wine in El Paso, it doesn't have a canned on or best by date printed on the can so only Total Wine and maybe some higher being knows how long this has been sitting there warm on the shelf. Knowing that this beer has very good head retention above a good looking beer. There is a little bit of sediment floating around in the beer which to be can be a good thing as it probably brings more taste to the beer. Even though this beer was purchased warm it still has some nice hops presence and a decent dryish IPA aftertaste. I hope I get the chance to try this beer fresh on tap in their taproom again.
