Brewed using 100% Weyermann Pilsner malt and a Parti-Gyle Mash, where only the strongest wort or "first runnings" were collected into our small kettle and boiled for 13 hours to coax our deep maillard reactions. The "second runnings" we're collected in the big kettle and became 20° of Nowhere our 2020 Doppelbock release. Thirteen to Lyfe was rested in Willett bourbon barrels for 13 months. The final blend comprised of two 8 year old "High Rye" Willet barrels and one 3 year old "High Rye" Willett barrel. A complex aroma of cacao, caramel, and charred oak leaps out of the glass. Bold flavors of vanilla, toffee, raisins, and plumbs. Subtle notes of cinnamon and banana bread with some sherry-like sweetness and alcohol warmth.

Definitely a big American barleywine!

Rich, red-brown liquid, not overly dark, crystal clear in the edges with a very thin film of light khaki head. Looks the part, though a bit thin and certainly not reflective of the massive ABV.

Description of the beer fits the nose beautifully, with a heavy rye influence — I actually thought of Willet (I love their ryes) on my first few sips before looking at the beer description). Provides a big earthy, leathery, peppery, and dry element. But that gives way to wonderful dried dark fruits, figs, toffee, molasses, charred oak, and vanilla. Pound cake and and some warm brandy. Really nice, though for the ABV it would expect it to be a little bolder — the rye really dominates, which is a shame.

Unfortunately while the nose is a wonderful and nuanced example of the category, this one falls off steeply (for me) on the tongue. That dominant rye characteristic might be the problem, as the peppery rye vapors hit hard up front and then the whole thing dries out to a very fast and uninteresting finish. Barely any traces of the wonderful fruits and toffee and sweet vanilla. Comes off quite bitter and sharp, which I might chalk up to it being heavily hopped (American style) if not for the consistent, heavy-handed rye presence. Again, I really like rye whiskey. But I don’t want my barleywines to taste like a muddled rye. Having said that, this thing is dangerously drinkable at 15%+. You’re certainly aware of some heat and booze (as you should be with a barleywine — that’s part of the fun). But this thing does not drink like 15%.

Nice texture but a little thin for the size. Started strong but finished pretty weak for my tastebuds. Too bad.
