Poured from a tap at their brewpub into pint glass in January 2022.
Appearance: A black IPA! Dark black color with 2-finger tan head. It is deep and dark unlike other IPAs. Head is lasts a minute, leaving a small covering. There is a minimal amount of lacing on the glass, unlike other IPAs.
Smell: A mixed aroma of citrus like grapefruit, pine, and hops, as well as some malty sweetness like caramel. Also, a little earthy or straw aroma. Very balanced and unique for an IPA.
Taste: Just like the smell, it is a mix of IPA and stout flavors. There is some hop bitterness like an IPA, but also chocolate sweetness. Unlike most IPAs, the citrus and pine flavors are very subtle. Has a very nice after-taste that lasts a long time. Overall, a very unique balance of IPA bitterness and stout sweetness.
Mouthfeel: Thick feel with a smooth strong body, which makes this very drinkable. Medium-Strong alcohol, which matches the 8.3% listed.
This is a very unique IPA. It has an nteresting mix of citrus, grapefruit, hops, chocolate, and other flavors, which makes it enjoyable. I like the overall balance, and this is smooth and nicely balanced. I have not found many similar Black IPAs, but I do like this a little better than Founder's Black Penance. I prefer McCall's Lehigh IPA and One Hop Wonders - Willie to this.
