12oz bottle poured into a NG glass

A- pours a deep black color with a two-finger creamy khaki colored head that has great retention long after the pour and leaves some lacing behind

S- smells of roasted malt, chocolate, smoked wood, peat & bandaide

T- smoky and roasted malt up front leads into some chocolaty sweetness, followed by vanilla whipping cream and mocha coffee. The finish brings out some smoked wood that gives light flavors of smoked peat and pork, lingers of smoke and chocolate

M- medium body and moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into a creamy silky finish, high drinkability

O- smoke is just the right intensity, super drinkable, wish i had more than one

Pours a dark cola brown body, one finger thick dark mocha head, good retention, thin lacing, bits of lacing. Not a whole lot. Smells of a fair bit of heavy campfire smoke, sweet milk chocolate, a bit of bitter cocoa. Even a bit of cola sweetness. A mix of sweet and tobacco. Flavour is a sweet milk chocolate, bitter cocoa, toffee sweetness, switched up with a fair bit of smoke and a deep, earthy and herbal bitterness. It's almost metallic, though this gets more interesting as it warms up. More of the smoke and sweetness intermingles, and it becomes a bit more interesting. The smoke is more of a dense, cigar-heavy smokiness that yet lingers only for a short while, making you want to take another sip to bring it back for further consideration. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, lighter carbonation, a slight dark fruit slickness followed by a bitter herbal, hoppy finish. As far as smoked porters go, this is a fairly interesting beer and I think this works well enough in terms of the balance of the smoke and the sweet chocolate goes. The smoke is reasonably strong, but it doesn't squat and sit on your tongue for too long. I enjoyed this one a fair bit more than Stone's rendition.

This marks my 47th beer from New Glarus that I've rated. Not a milestone like 50, but it is worth reflecting on how a small craft brewer like New Glarus can brew with excellence in the British and German traditions when I find most brewers can brew consistently well in only one. This porter is proof. And it blends both traditions since smoked beers are mostly a German specialty.

I cannot even suggest small ways to improve Smoke On The Porter.
Its aroma promises the smoky, sweet malt delivered in the taste. Its mouth is pleasant...enough bubbles to let the interesting tastes come out (instead of how sometimes other brewers use bubbles to cover their flaws.)
My only suggestion is to brew it again... next year if you would please.

Pours a serious dark brown with a creamy tan head that persists.
The aroma is campfire, chocolate, toffee and a hint of fruit.
Taste is smoky, char, dark chocolate, dark fruit, slightly acidic cola at the finish and nicely bitter.
Mouth is medium, smooth with a lovely rounded finish.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall New Glarus Signature glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with a hint of ruby. Moderate amount of bubbles and about a finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A smokey and roasty dark malt driven aroma with a scent of smoked malt and chocolate. Dark roasted malt with an upfront scent of smoke along with chocolate, coffee, toast, biscuit, grains, and yeast. Hints of wood, leather, and tobacco. Also some hints of brown sugar. A very good smokey aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a smokey, roasty, and sweet dark malt driven taste with notes of smoke and chocolate. Dark roasted barley malt with a big presence of smoke along with notes of chocolate, coffee, biscuit, toast, grains, and yeast. Undertones of wood, leather, and tobacco. Sweet taste of brown sugar. Subtle hop bitterness towards the finish. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and very smooth.

Overall: A very good take on a Smoked Porter. Good mix of smoke and dark malt flavors.

Pours a very dark brown, nearly black, but with good clarity in strong light. Light tan foam rises and fades in a couple minutes. Aroma is nice, some caramelized plantain sweetness and rich maltiness.

Taste has a nicely rounded element of woodsmoke, well integrated roast malt with a dry finish. Yeast brings more of the plantain esters. Body is on the lighter side of medium, slight astringency which thins it slightly. Overall it's a pleasant fall beer, though it makes me long for a proper rauchbier.

Same beer as Unplugged Smoke on the Porter, just a different label. Duplicate listings are getting ridiculous on here.

Nice smoke, not overpowering. Little bit of chocolate and coffee make it through. A tad bit of vanilla.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours a very dark cola brown with a thin skim of dark mocha head with quickly recedes.
S: Nice wood smoke greets the nose first. Dark caramel malt, chocolate, and leather.
T: Comforting wood smoke, dark caramel malt, dark honey, leather, dark dry chocolate, and a hint of molasses.
M: Medium body. Darkly sweet, but only mildly so. Velvety feel. Some degree of lingering and maturing on the palate too. Hint of dryness (not as much as most porters, which is a plus in my book).
D: A very nice offering. I love it when the wood smoke is just right...not overpowering and not too faint. Melds perfectly with the rest of the brew. Make a trip to WI and seek it out!

12 Fluid Ounce Bottle
Bottled on December 4th, 2016
Reviewed on January 19th, 2017
Served in a New Glarus Glass

Look (4.00)
Poured an opaque dark brown body. Small mahogany glow on the edges of the glass when held up to light.
A thin light-brown head formed and quickly collapsed leaving a frothy cap. Minimal amounts of soapy lacing.

Smell (4.25)
Smoky malts were the dominant aroma. Woody undertones. Malts were toasty and semi-sweet. Minor hint of mocha.

Taste (4.25)
Smoky/toasty malts hit the tongue first. Dark chocolate. cocoa. Subtle hints of sweeter notes like vanilla and mocha. Smoke maintained a dominant hold over the flavor profile, leaving smoky and woody notes of roasted malts towards the finish.

Feel (3.75)
Medium-full bodied. Low carbonation. Felt slightly flat... not so much to compromise an otherwise strong beer, but enough to notice.

Overall (4.00)
Enjoyable porter all-around.
Smoke was dominant but not overwhelming.
The only place this brew fell flat for me was just that... the low, but noticeable flatness.
Excellent flavor profile. Another strong beer from New Glarus!

Bottle into a pint glass.

Pours dark cola brown, minimal head that doesn't last. The smoke stands out in the nose, with some malt mixed thrown in. Also some chocolate and coffee. Smoke is the first taste that hits the tongue, with malty, chocolatey tastes that finish. Good carbonation.

Not my favorite style of beer, so take my review for what it's worth. For the style, this was done well and worth trying.
