Imagine being a general labourer during the birth of the industrial revolution. Now imagine the pure bliss of taking a vacation from that. When Hiram Walker shuttled his workers by locomotive from Walkerville to “Paradise Grove”, the workers experienced something quite similar to the “Lupulin Effect”. An active ingredient in this beer’s hops, Lupulin stimulates the mind and creates senses of euphoria, friendliness, reduced anxiety, and a craving for more. As Walker’s workers step foot onto the train, they emitted these exact feelings in anticipation for their week of leisure to come. Crack this can, and it’s all aboard the Lupulin Express. 5 SRM. 35 IBU.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a nonic pint glass. From my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. My second beer from the Kingsville, Ontario brewery, and for 2025...

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated May 1 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear golden-yellow colour, generating nearly two fingers of pocked, foamy white head that lasts for a little over five minutes. It leaves behind a thick ring of lace above a creamy collar, with a thin film lasting on the surface - lookin' good so far. The aroma is understated, consisting of herbal, earthy hops and grainy, doughy malts interspersed with hints of citrus and stone fruit.
Not bad at all, starting out with flavours of bready malts, corn flakes and grainy sweetness, countered by floral, herbal, slightly earthy/resiny bitterness that develops later on in the sip; there are also hints of grapefruit and apricot, but they're relatively faint. Mildly citrusy aftertaste that quickly fades to off-dry. Medium-light in body, with assertive carbonation that adds some prickliness to this brew's smooth mouthfeel. I had no problem polishing off my glass, and would've ordered another.
Final Grade: 3.76, a B+. Lupulin Express is a pleasant, mild-mannered pale ale that unfortunately won't be knocking any socks off. I appreciated its balanced flavour profile and exceptional drinkability - truthfully, I think I'd prefer this over most session IPAs, due to the fact that it actually has enough malt presence to maintain some sort of equilibrium with its hops. It's the first Grove product I've been fortunate enough to try, and I'd say I'm satisfied... sure, it's not an exciting beer, but APAs generally aren't. I'd buy this again, and encourage BAs who are interested in even-handed lighter ales to give this a try.
