Ross Brewing Co. "Local Summer"
16 fl. oz. can
Notes: "GOLDEN ALE WITH PEAR AND APRICOT", "32 IBU", hopped with Galaxy, Amarillo, and Rakau.
Look: A hazy golden body is capped by a full head of bright white foam. Very good head retention and lacing.
Smell: The aroma is sweetish and grainy with a variety of fruits that seem like mainly orchard fruits.
Taste: The sweetish and grainy malt remains and it tastes like a beer with fruit added rather than the other way around. The apricot is clear, the pear not so much, and it's just lightly acidic. There are also fruity notes of orange, peach, passionfruit, and apple as well as some floral character, spiciness, and pine. A firm bitterness balances it and it finishes dry, bitter, spicy and piney once the sweetish malt and fruity notes pass.
Feel: Medium bodied and crisp.
Overall: I was expecting a fruit beer from this but it's really more of a pale ale with an already impressive hop charge that just happens to have extra fruit added to it. The labeling may be a little misleading for those who are seeking a less bitter and fruitier beer but I like it just as it is.
