From notes, as I reviewed this back to back with the Bourbon aged version

Appearance: Poured a near opaque dark black/brown that reveals little but with a solid two fingers of head that did not lace but produced solid retention.

Smell: Charred toffee malt predominantly with plum, fig and maybe some berry notes. That being said, the potency just never appears, even after ample warming.

Taste: Restrained toffee to start that hands itself off to plum and fig with a berry touch before a earth and herbal bitterness at the end finishes things off. Very much as the nose, only you get that potency out of it.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation gives it that creamy stout texture, even if it is a bit milder and seems to focus mostly on the fruitier notes. The transitioning is ok, it's a build up that seems to end a bit too soon. Aftertaste is a nice mix of the same flavours.

Drinkability: This beer is thick and stout-like, making it very much a heavy sipper that drinks like a meal. It does seems to make me feel a bit bloated as it's consumed. That also being said, it's clearly by design and mean to be consumed on a occasion.

Final Thoughts: I haven't had a lot of Doppelbocks, but this one has fared better then the others I've had. This offering strikes me as an alternative to stout, but you don't want the bitter darkness of stout. This instead offers toffee and milder fruitiness. I got this and the Bourbon aged one as a gift, and because this review if from notes, I can say this is the better of the two to me. This is worth picking up, if you are looking for something heavier.

Purchase from Durand. Served cold into a snifter. Canned January 10, 2024. 2024 Rendition listed at 9.2% ABV.

Appearance - Nearly black with a finger plus of foamy light tan head. A great panorama of lacing left all over the glass.

Smell - Earthy grain, lots of bread, malt with some sweetness.

Taste - Earthy with loads of bread and a well hidden ABV. Some dark grains and light fruit tastes namely plums and apples.

Mouthfeel - Smooth and medium-full bodied with a well disguised ABV. Easy drinking and moderate finish.

Overall - Not a world class doppelbock, but very tasty and something to be proud of. Would gladly enjoy another couple glasses of this fine brew.

A good dopplebock, hits the target of the style and a boozy beer but not overwhelming because of malting quality. Tough to finish, one drinker, one day.
