500ml bottle at Beyond Beer in Hamburg. MHD 06.12.24 #20. Served in a ceramic mug.

Looks dark amber, but...the mug is ceramic. Head starts off large. Settles into a clotty layer in about a minute. Smell is smokey, nutty, background of bread yeast. Maybe a bit more gasoline-like that Aecht Schlenkerla. Taste is the same smokey profile with amped up nuts and a cocoa sweetness (sweetened cocoa). Mouthfeel is full but not heavy. Smooth, still. Overall, it's quite good -- if looking for a darkish rauch bier, this will certainly scratch that itch.

L:
-pours a clear copper with a small to medium, creamy, off-white head
-medium carbonation visible
S:
-bacon,pleasant beechwood smoke,malty,spicy,bready,plums,slightly soapy
T:
-Follows the nose + grassy & caramel
F:
-light to medium body
-low to medium carbonation
O:
Invites obvious comparisons to Schlenkerla's famous smoked Märzen. The "Räucherla" is a little more simple butstill a very good Rauchbier, despite the little soapy off-flavour.

Yields an amber-light brown color, with a big, beige head.

Smells of toffee, smoked wood, caramel and old herbs.

Has a light, refreshing mouthfeel, exhibiting a perfectly balanced beer with a lively carbonation.

Tastes of smoked ham from the very beginning, effectivly entangled into earth and rustic bread crust. Straw and caramel malts establish an utmost pleasant, multi-layered sweetness, in which the smoked flavor unfolds marvelously well. Finishes with a dry tone, which automatically adds complexity to the dominant malt sweetness.

Decadently smoky, rich and noble, with a pleasant, well working rustic counterpart.

Enjoyable Rauchbier. From the bottle, it pours a dark coppery amber with a moderate head which dissipates quickly. Light Rauch (smoke) flavor. I like it!

50cl bottle poured into my Spaten seidel

BBE AUG 2011

A - Copper body, lacking clarity, with a proud creamy 3 finger head.
Head retention and lacing are excellent

S- Smoked ham, delicate, not overpowering, perhaps some bready malts.

T- A fragile malty sweetness up front balancing with an unexpected hoppy semi-dry finish. A medium smokiness blankets the whole flavour profile, with a hint of a bready dark rye like note lingering on.

M- Medium, very slightly thin body, medium carbonation.

D- A very nice level of smokiness. Hoppier than expected for a Franconian beer. Perhaps too light on the malt sweet/toastier notes but overall a tasty beer.

A - A brillant red/amber color with a fine and white foam.

S - A thin fragrance of smoked malt at the nose with little sweetness.

T - The taste is of smoked bacon and smoked wood with an incredible balance with the sweet malts and the hop bitterness.

M - There is a medium body. Also a fine smoothness that go with a good carbonation. The beer finish with a smooky bitterness.

D - Very enjoyable beer. I like the armonic and equilibrated way to mix smoked, sweetness and bitterness!!

I swung by the Hummel Brewpub on 28SEP14 and had this one vom Faß. A 0.5l mug cost me €2.10. Enjoyed out in their Biergarten....

The bier filling my mug was a clear, deep chestnut/mahogany color. It had a frothy, creamy, light tan head and excellent lacing. (4.55). The aroma was very dry and smoky; quite inviting. (4.15). Had a solid medium body, and was fairly smooth, with only light prickly action. (4.05).

Possessed light roasty notes, with some toasty caramel. The smoky character was easily evident yet not overpowering. Had more rauch than Spezial, yet less than Schlenkerla. Quite dry in the finish, with some floral hopping. Solid! (4.10). Drinkability (4.05). Overall - 4.12.

Original bottle review from 02OCT10: Another bottle I snagged last week in Bamberg, this 0.5l bottle cost €0.95, plus €0.08 deposit at a local Rewe store.

Best by 24OCT10, it poured a rich, clear auburn with minimal carbo; a lovely color! Head was thin and light tan with good stick in the glass. Has a healthy rauch nose; nothing overpowering, but still solid. Body tended to be a bit on the thin side of medium, yet it was still smooth going down.

Good malts lead off, with as touch of caramel and a bit of toast. Nice smokiness comes forth; not subtle, yet not in your face either. Solid, right there. Some light floral hopping enters at the finish, which is a little dry, though the smoke does linger a bit. Another solid Bamberg-area offering. Prosit!!

Sampled on-tap at the brewery pub.

This rauchbier poured a beautiful, clear red-amber color with tan, creamy foam that settled but clung to the glass and coated it a bit. The smell was a very pleasant smokey aroma. The taste was smoke blended perfectly with sweet malt and with mild hop bitterness beneath. Very nice flavor. The mouthfeel was smooth and dry overall with medium body and good carbonation. The finish and aftertaste melded the smokey, hoppy, and malty flavors. This was a very nice rauchbier (sort of between Spezial and Schlenkerla in smokiness). Very enjoyable.
