2023 vintage; consumed on 1/22/2025
Pours a viscous, motor-oil black body capped with a finger of near-creamy, pale mocha foam; modest head retention yields a spotty, paper-thin layer of cap, moderate, frothy collar, and sparse array of webby, soapy lacing holding tentatively to the walls of the glass.
Aromas bring chocolate fudge across melted marshmallow as a toasted oak inflection takes hold and pointed accents of vanilla caviar amplifies emerging silkiness throughout the bouquet.
Taste opens to silky malts and dark chocolate, with creamy marshmallow and charry vanilla meeting bourbon-oak residuals over the mid-palate as a tinge of caramel crosses the finish.
Mouthfeel shows a full body and minimal carbonation, espousing rich, silky texturing into a creamy peak trending past the mid-palate while a subtle bitterness builds into mild char on the finish.
Beautifully effective cocoa/vanilla adjuncting counters an inherently bitter roast profile and warm barrel intonation with layers of attenuated sweetness; a simplistic yet entirely inviting harmony achieved.

Drank on tap at Coles Road Brewing, Berlin, CT
Served in a tulip
The beer poured a viscous, somewhat dull looking, dark brown hue that bordered on black. There was no head nor any lacing. A fine sediment could be seen floating throughout the body.
The nose was fantastic. Rich chocolate notes dominated. Chocolate fudge came to mind or perhaps Hershey’s chocolate syrup. Loads of vanilla too. Vanilla extract specifically. Bit of sweet brown sugar as well. Overall, quite simplistic but really enjoyable.
The flavor profile was similar to the nose except that the barrel character was much more apparent. Rich cocoa notes led things off. Loads of sweet caramel malts too. Bit of roasted malt character as well. Vanilla came through strong in the center. The bourbon barrel notes appeared on the back end and crescendoed in the finish. Moderately boozy but surprisingly smooth given the 12.9% ABV.
Excellent rich, creamy, full bodied mouthfeel. The liquid contained a super fine, subtle effervescence that gave the beer a nice frothy slickness on the palate.
This was my first time trying any of the beers in Coles Road’s Reason Tatters series, and it was definitely quite enjoyable. While not super complex, this beer equally showcased the chocolate, vanilla and bourbon barrel notes. Moving forward, I definitely plan to seek out the other offerings in this series.
