Taste: Clean, Toasted Malt, Bread-Like
Aroma: Sweet, Honey-Like Aroma
Mouthfeel: Light-Bodied

When you think of German beer, this one is likely one the first that comes to mind. Our version of this golden lager is a little bit toasty, with some robust floral notes from classic noble hops. Lightly sweet and supremely balanced, this is a beer you’ll drain without thinking twice.

Pair this one with a light cheese plate, spicy Thai food, and those big soft pretzels with beer cheese with some awesome stone ground mustard.

“Helles” (pronounced HELL-us) is a nice midway point between a step up from a light lager and a darker Dunkel. Pilsner malt and the classic noble hops combine to give Heroes subtle malty notes and a supremely clean-drinking experience. It’s simultaneously smooth, drinkable, and complex.

We pour this beer in a Willi Becher pub glass. The tapered edge promotes proper head retention – which helps keep the aroma intact – and highlights Heroes’ gorgeous golden color. You could use a regular shaker pint, but let’s be honest. This glass is way cooler.

Had Heroes Helles at Ironshield taproom, Lawrenceville, Georgia, on draft into willi becher.

Pours deep copper-gold with clarity and 1-finger off-white head, with good retention, pulling some lace down the glass. Mild spice aroma off pour, which continues, joined briefly by a hint of herbals, before mild bready malt and floral aromas take over. On tasting, begins nicely malt sweet, then moderate hop spice joins, over a nice full body, which carries into a little, mild citrus, and a crisp, still rather bready finish.

The copper-gold color adds interest to an otherwise bog-standard helles.

Great helles brew, not too malty and balanced out well with the hops used here. Not as aggressive as the Creature Comforts lagers but still good stuff

Appearance: Clear, brilliant gold, almost amber color. Fluffy white head with moderate retention.

Aroma: Mostly floral aroma with some grain.

Flavor & aftertaste: Floral, spicy and grainy. Restrained, but present bitterness.

Mouth-Feel: Full bodied. Low carbonation on the back end. Finish is moderate, crisp with a mild lingering bitterness.

Overall: A solid, well crafted Helles style. This one is quite tasty and well balanced. Appearance wise, it had too short of a head retention and it is much darker than true German Helles (leans more toward a 7 - 8 on SRM scale). None the less, it hits the other marks well - floral & spicy hops, a little grainy, slight bitterness, full bodied and well rounded. I'll definitely drink this one again.
