Aroma: Honey, Floral, Soft Fruits
Taste: Clean, Crisp, Light
Mouthfeel: Light-Bodied
This is the beer you’ll grab when watching the game with friends, for a post-yardwork brew, or manning the grill. Karneval is the preferred after-work brew of our brewing team. It's one of those beers you’ll always want to keep on hand, boasting a super-approachable flavor profile that’s clean, crispy, and supremely sippable.
Pair Karneval with fried chicken, a light fish dish, or a backyard whiffle ball game.
Kölsch is popular in the Cologne region of Germany and has been around for more than 300 years. Our version is brewed true to the original style, following the German Purity Law of 1516 (AKA the Reinheitsgebot).
At our taproom, it’s served in a traditional Stange glass. While it may look like a super narrow water glass, there’s a great reason for it. Because Kölsch is delicate with low carbonation, a Stange helps with keeping that fizz in the beer.
Karneval is named after the traditional pre-Lenten festival. Dating back to medieval times in Venice, the party eventually moved north into other Catholic countries – and eventually to North America. While the German and American versions both involve parades, masks and parties, Germany likes to make fun of politicians and current events. The American version is a little more … um … spirited.

Had Karneval at Ironshield taproom, Lawrenceville, Georgia, on draft into willi becher.
Pours pale yellow with crystal clarity and 1-finger, fizzing near-white head, with decent retention, but leaving only a little lace. Aroma of noble hop spices off pour, soon joined by a little white wine grape and then mild biscuit as warms. On tasting, begins smooth and mildly sweet, with aggressive carbonation, then nice white wine grape fruity, over a little mild, sweet malt, leading into a sweet and fruity yet crisp, slightly herbal finish.
It's kühl that Ironshield gives you the option of ordering Karneval, a true-to-style kölsch, if not fully-refined and a bit over-carbonated, in a proper, 200-ml. stange at the brewery. (I accidentally ordered a large pour when the barmaid did not ask my preference.) It's not cool that the Ironshield taproom will sell you a 6-pk. of Karneval over two months out of date packaged in a carton hiding the "best by" stamp on the bottom of the cans.

Appearance: Clear, brilliant pale gold. White, fluffy head with moderate retention.
Aroma: Subtle aromas. Initial floral note and grainy.
Flavor & aftertaste: Semi-sweet, mild bitterness. Malt forward with subtle spicy flavor from hops.
Mouth-feel: Medium bodied. Soft on the palate. Moderate to low carbonation. Finish is crisp, clean short and drying.
Overall: Did a side by side with Reissdorf: Lighter looking color (more straw gold vs gold) than German import version. Nice fluffy head, but with much shorter retention. Floral & spicy hops. Malty. Reissdorf exhibits a more full, creamier mouthfeel. Finish is clean and crisp. I'm familiar with the current brewers and they are very reputable. I'd like to re-evaluate this with a more fresh sample or from draft, as this sample is several months old, which is key with Kolsch. Will revisit.
Note: Revisited fresher sample. Much better. Also drank on draft at the brewery, definitely much better.

Appearance: Pours a golden-hued body with a lovely degree of clarity. Frothy, white head that quickly peters out.
Smell: Minimally malty, a delicate hint of sweetness and fruitiness leading to a slight winy note.
Taste: A light, lightly bready malt profile with a gentle sweetness. Ultra faint fruitiness. Scant hop character and bitterness. Slowly but sufficiently dries for the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation - could have a bit more zip to it.
Overall: Decent.
