This "ordinary bitter" is neither ordinary nor bitter. Clean and slightly sweet with no discernible bitterness. Notes of toffee and subdued caramel malt backbone lightly carbonated.

Appearance: Body is a beautiful translucent copper with crimson notes, but sadly it showcases incredibly low carbonation, and given the only single finger of head the quickly disappated, it is a bit disappointing on this front. That said, that the brewer did advise this in the description of it does buy it some leeway here.

Smell: Toffee malt with maybe a hint of raspberry in the background. One noted but potent enough and gets the job done.

Taste: Rich toffee and caramel malt followed by more toffee malt that is tempered by a tea like bitterness. Rich, clean, highly sessionable and not espcially bitter.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation, is low which is a bit of a mixed bag here. On one hand, it really lets the malt stand alone, but on the other I think its presence would lighten it up a bit more. Transistioning is good...but it's a very easy journey between malts. Aftertaste is mild malt which is solid.

Drinkability: Light to medium body, and I would say it pushes the limit of what a bitter vs an ESB should be. It still manages to be sessionable and drinkable, but it's not quite as light as you'd expect from a 4.5% ABV. Still, it settles down exceptionally well and the low carbonation leaves no gas concerns.

Final Thoughts: This is a solid bitter, if you want your bitter to be heavier then most and have low carbonation. If you like them a bit more lighter and whimsy, this may not quite fit the bill. That said, it's still a solid offering and would recommend it.
