New Ridge Brewing "Festbier"
32 oz. crowler from the brewery on 25 September 2020
Look: Absolutely clear deep golden/amber colored body beneath an inch and a half of white foam. The head retention is good but the lacing is unfortunately less than average.
Smell: Sweetish, grainy and cereal-like malty aroma. Very clean with a hint of spicy hops and just a flicker of lager yeast sulphur.
Taste: Richer than the aroma suggests but following the same character. It's sweetish but balanced, quickly doing an about face as the hop bitterness and spice hits mid-way. The bready sweetness fades steadily and then it lingers, dry and spicy until you're ready for another sip.
Feel: Medium-full in body and gently crisp. Smooth.
Overall: If you attend the Oktoberfest celebration in Munich you'll most likely be drinking a beer that's almost exactly like this. Darker copper-colored and caramelish/toasty versions are available in certain tents if you seek them out, but this is the music for the masses as it's easier to drink and the flavor doesn't build up on your palate as readily. I'm a little late to the game on this one as it's probably almost gone but you can look for it next year.
