New Ridge Brewing "Midnight Pumpkin"
on tap at the brewery on 1 November 2020
Look: Black in the full glass; very dark brown body with mahogany highlights. Short head of light tan. Limited head retention and lacing (served in glass).
Smell: Delicately spicy with all-spice and a hint of vanilla amidst roastiness and dark chocolate notes.
Taste: Dark chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, and dark coffee roastiness with dull spices and a touch of earthy, leafy, and woody hops. A hint of vanilla comes through intermittently. Solid bitterness. Dry, long lingering roasty/ashy finish. Nicely balanced without any additional dark malt acidity.
Feel: Medium bodied and smooth.
Overall: This is obviously the London Porter with spices added, and I don't blame them as they're been quite busy and probably needed to split a tank to get an extra beer out. As it stands, however, the spicing doesn't really come through in a clear way, nor does it do anything to improve the base beer. It's OK, but muddled, and their more straightforward Pumpkin Ale is much better.
