One of three beers being tapped on Dark Lager Day, behold our Czech style Dark Lager brewed in collaboration with @niteglowbeer and @sugarcreekmaltco.
Much like the resurrection of our own Downers Grove brewery whose roots are from a bygone era in brewing in Europe, Sugar Creek resurrected a previously defunct barley that was once popular before WWII. Fortuitously, this type of barley thrives in climates very similar to the climate of Sugar Creekâs Indiana farm, allowing Caleb to grow a crop from a few hundred grams to enough to supply only 8 breweries across the country. We are honored to have been selected as one of these breweries and to be the only one to use this malt in a dark lager.
Soft water, triple decocted, Czech Saaz hopped, naturally carbonated, and lagered for over two months. This beer is only 4.3%abv, extremely delicate and light, but presents wonderful roasted malt and spicy hop character.

Pours a dark brown color with a ruby red hue that produces a two-finger dense tan head that dissipates slowly, leaving some nice glass lacing behind.
Aroma is dark brown bread, some caramel, some toasted malt, slight nuttiness, some black pepper, grass.
Taste brings much of what the aroma indicated. Dark brown bread, some rye bread, toasted malt, cocoa powder, coffee bean, some caramel, slight nuttiness, some grassy, black peppery spice hop character. Nice depth of malt character for only 4.3% thanks to the triple decoction.
Light medium body. Ample carbonation, soft, dry, clean.
This is an outstanding Czech dark lager that delivers on drinkability and complexity. Wouldn't expect anything less from Goldfinger.

Pours a dark nutmeg brown color. Clear when held to the light but opaque due to the dark color of the beer. Thick, frothy, tan head forms on the beer when it is poured. It them slowly partially dissipates, but retains a remarkable thick layer of velvety foam on top of the beer. Its downright lovely.
Aroma has notes of dark crusty bread, rye bread, nutty malts, with a light toasted character, finally giving way to some light spicy, grassy hops.
Taste follows the nose with notes of dark bready malts, crusty rustic bread, nutty malts, some lightly toasted character with notes of cocoa, coffee grounds, giving way to some spicy, lightly peppery, grassy hops.
Feel is light bodied, smooth, and easy drinking. Moderate carbonation. Semi-dry finish.
Overall an outstanding Czech dark lager.

16oz tallboy poured into dimpled mug.
Canned on date: 02/22/2022.
Consumed on 4/6/2022.
Appearance: Light brown body with red hue. Off white colored head that stacks up tall. Lacing left everywhere on the glass. Thin cap remains on top of the beer the entire drinking session.
Smell: Dark bread and caramel sweetness and lightly roasted malts. Light smoke. Dry chocolate note / bakers cocoa. Light spiced & herbal hops.
Taste: Light roast malt, lighted toasted grain, and light caramel note with dark bready sweetness delicately balanced. Hint of earth and bakers cocoa that subtly starts drying out the beer in the middle of each sip. Finishes with light dark bread sweetness and faint bitterness of bakers cocoa.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with just the right amount of carbonation. Texture is a smooth and creamy body here in this lager. Very, very drinkable.
Overall: Excellently crafted lager for sure. No surprise from Goldfinger at all. Excited that I got to try yet another beer brewed using this Sugar creek malt.

Thanks to Aaron for sharing this one!
Huge rocky head of billowing tan foam, long lasting with sheets of lace down the sides. Brownish black color, reddish when held to the light.
Aroma was mellow with some toasted dark bread crusts and hints of chocolate. Taste was similar, toasted dark bread crusts and bitter bakers chocolate. Semi-dry, very smooth feel, light bodied with supple carb. Finished clean, very drinkable. Would get this again for sure.

Dark brown opaque body with lighter edges, full tan head and moderate lacing. Smells of toasted caramel malts with slight smoke, earth and dark grains. Taste gives caramel and toast their own due, earth and dark grains support, almost has a hint of vanilla in there too, full potent flavors the whole sip long. Feel is creamy and malty, has dark tones but with some subtle sweet smoothness that gives it a complex movement on the palate. Really enjoyed this, perfect for a wet spring day, will happily have the rest of the four pack

For a beer that comes in at only 4.3% ABV, this one has a lot of flavor and doesn't feel light at all. I should not be surprised as Goldfinger continues to turn out really great lagers. This one was had a nice roasty flavor and was really smooth and flavorful.

Canned 2/22/22; drank 3/2/22 @ the Yarchives.
Opaque dark brown/orange appearance.
A rough pour yielded a big tan head; nice lace.
Light roast coffee bean, raw wheat & mild cream notes in the nose.
Creamy, medium thin mouthfeel.
Light roast coffee bean & mild cream flavors up front; raw wheat notes on the finish.
Very drinkable, but unique & flavorful. I'd have another.
