We teamed up with our friends at Binny's and Pollyanna Brewing to brew a beer that would provide a window into the often overlooked but just as important French beer ingredients. Fortuitously, Sugar Creek Malt Co has spent the last few years propagating a French origin barley called Avalon which made it a perfect choice in building the foundation of our single decocted Alsatian-Style lager. Complementing this complex base malt is a pinch of Franco-Belges caramel malts to add an amber hue and additional depth, serving as the ideal canvas for seasoning with Stisselspalt and Barbe Rouge Alsatian hops. “Bank of the Rhine” is aptly named after the ideal location for French hop growth. This 6.4%, naturally carbonated lager balances fruity and noble hop flavors with delicious maltiness.

Murky dark amber body with a full cream colored head with remain of lacing bands on the glass. Earthy grains with a dark yeast leading the nose with earthy hops, nuts, caramel malts, and grain in nose. Taste is a bit bright than it smells, with mild lemon peel and brighter grains added to the mix. Feel is medium-light bodied, the darkness is not defined by the weight here, rather the yeast and malt complexion with brown bread textures

16oz can served in a curvy Monhegan pint glass. Canned on 3/24/25. Sent to me by @Luscious_Malfoy in Stout/Barleywine BIF #2.
Pours fairly clear, dark amber, not quite reaching opacity at the glass's widest. Medium sized, dense, creamy head. Moderate active carbonation visible along the edges. Smell is nuts, toffee, dark bread. Plenty of grain husk, yeast is evident but not overwhelming.
Taste is moderately sweet, very grainy, leans toward the brown bread. Toffee is clearer, something more tea-like. Earthiness. Almost a sourdough yeastiness to it.
Mouthfeel is prickly and clean. Very nice beer. Pretty much what I expect from Goldfinger, based on what @FBarber has taught me about them.

Poured from a 16oz can into a New Glarus dimpled mug. Pours an amber with almost three fingers of wet sand colored foam. Aromas of fruity and earthy hops with some rye bread malts in the background. Taste follows but I like the nose on this a little more. It doesn’t taste bad butt has a little spice to it that masks the fruitiness of the hops I get on the nose. Medium-full mouthfeel. Lower carbed for a lager. Interesting beer for sure. Like the ABV, love the color and uniqueness and found it to be a very enjoyable lager perfect for a nice spring evening.
