…eine bierige Köstlichkeit mit einem Hauch von Rauch! Die Farbe wie ein heller Bernstein mit orangem Reflex und einem cremefarbigen Schaum.

From the bottle, it pours a moderately dark amber with a small head, quickly dissipating to a ring. Lots of smoke definitely in the nose. ...and mouth. Yum!

Note that this is a less smokey rauchbier than Schlenkerla - the majority of rauchbiers are closer to this in flavor than Schlenkerla. this is a good example of the type. Overall, a great brewery!

Best before: 23/09/14. 5.5% ABV per the label. The label art is adorable - especially on the cap. .5L brown glass bottle acquired at Hopfen und Malz in Berlin and served into a Berlinder Kindl Weisse glass in me friend's gaff in Berlin. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average; I tend to really like rauchbieren.

Served cold and side-poured with standard vigor.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: One finger wide. Faded white colour. Okay thickness and creaminess. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. Head retention is poor - about 30 seconds at best.

BODY: Dark copper. Translucent. Nontransparent. It's fairly dull. No yeast particles or hop sediment is visible.

Not unique or special, but it looks somewhat nice for a rauchbier. I'm optimistic.

AROMA: Has some nicely subtle smokiness. Vague lager malts. It's a simple aroma, but it's got smokiness - and that's really all I ask for in a rauchbier.

No overt hop notes or yeast character are/is detectable. No off-notes.

A pleasant aroma of mild strength.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, refreshing, supple, and approachable. Medium-bodied. Nice thickness. Aptly carbonated.

Good overall presence on the palate. This texture complements the taste nicely.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, harsh, or astringent.

TASTE: The subtle smokiness is lovely, but I think they could push it a bit further. The malty body disappears beneath the smokiness. No yeast character, alcohol, or hop character comes through. Balanced - which is hard to do in a rauchbier. Average duration, intensity, and depth of flavour. It's not real complex, but I wouldn't call it simple either. Has some nice nuance, and it's a bit lighter on the palate than many rauchbieren. I quite like it. Not too porky or meaty, but still nicely smokey.

OVERALL: More drinkable than most rauchbieren, and very likable. Hides its ABV well. I'd definitely get this again, but it's not world class. Definitely worth trying. A pleasant surprise from a brewery I'll have to try more beers from.
