Rings of Splendor is the blend Private Press has been waiting to assemble. This release is a spirited synthesis of 3 imperial stouts that were aged in Heaven Hill, Blantons, Basil Hayden, and Woodford Double Oak barrels, all without adjuncts. Rings of Splendor exhibits waves of toasted coconut, vanilla, and marshmallow on the palate. A rich baseline of French roast, dark-chocolate cherry cordials, and almond caramel rounds out this classic expression of barrel-aged stout.

8 ball black with the thinnest dark tan blanket.
After having just finished off a Voodoo Barrel Room Collection bottle, this presents as uniquely divergent. It's got a bit of a cream or brie cheese element on the nose, yet a Werther's butterscotch lozenge on the palate, all paired with a strong shot of whiskey.
The oak is damply funky, boozy and splintery wood that perhaps has a bramble berry accent that's a bit unnerving, though I don't necessarily think it's bad. It's just sharp.
The body is overall thinner and harsher of assertiveness than I'm inclined to prefer as well.

The nose is great, so rich and deep with layered malt and barrel with dark chocolate, mild anise, leather, a dark honey sweetness and harmoniously integrated with the barrel that adds a rich blend of vanilla and mild coconut. Thr palate is similar but so harmoniously executed that the balance just impresses. Full bodied and lightly carbonated. Excellent stuff.

This one pours a dark black color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells like rich spicy oak, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, dark chocolate, and bourbon.
This has a really fantastic balance of sweet and bitter/spicy, with a nice sweet carmel, toffee, brown sugar sort of start, that gets followed by bitter creamy dark chocolate, and a spicy fantastic oaky finish.
This is medium bodied, not very boozy at all, with a nice drinkability. You really want to drink it slow to savor it.
I continue to be very impressed with Private Press, and very interested in where they go next.
Feb 12, 2022This smells like rich spicy oak, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, dark chocolate, and bourbon.
This has a really fantastic balance of sweet and bitter/spicy, with a nice sweet carmel, toffee, brown sugar sort of start, that gets followed by bitter creamy dark chocolate, and a spicy fantastic oaky finish.
This is medium bodied, not very boozy at all, with a nice drinkability. You really want to drink it slow to savor it.
I continue to be very impressed with Private Press, and very interested in where they go next.

A: Black Fawn pour with surfaces in gunmetal to shadowy aspects of battleship gray. The neckline boons an off-white, peanut/tawny stare, from the initial measurement before collapse. Retention on the dregs is throughout, with trivial but occasional clingage
S: Initial whiff emanates a roasted pasty trait, while cocooning the barrel to the wisdom of a conventional barrel-aged stout. For now, dark fruits set the stage at a distance, while sweet toasted malt strengthens the jump. Though bitter chocolate is a constant, the reference becomes more of a connotation with progression. That implication etches to Ponderosa bark in advance of the rising figs, raisins, and the late addition of spiced molasses before supporting Black Cat JuJu. The barrel begins to pair warm vanilla oak to the sweet Cocoa Crème edition of Wrether’s Original, while formulating primers to mopane lumber. Midriff cuts some of the roast on burnt caramel, and circulates near bourbon sugared plums, as timber & birch syrup compliment the smooth settings. So then, a strolling presence on heat, where abv is sagely controlled to edify the classic, but drippy involvedness
T: The build comes without a flavoring stimulus, so innate connotations work the palate with barrel(s) punctiliousness. Consequent to the criterion is a remote grasp on broadleaf associations that’s been derived from chestnut woodlands in a lengthy recall to foyer. This being a forte to aftertaste; nonetheless, theatres the prerequisite as palate embarks a viscous cuddling of roasted dark chocolate to the deeply tamped espresso. There’s a tipoff to caramel caked Peeps on the ridge, but this note comes with hurried dilution for spreads in vanilla Turkish taffy, as balminess kicks in to define the inaugural situation. In turn, the situational onset distances permitting a thermal energy construct on Sherry, which pairs Cherry Panna Cotta and prune-brandy Clafouti. Those fixings play around a bit, expanding withered dark fruit with barrel sponsorship, as timely delays assist progression. A push for furtherance brings the barrel’s attunement to toasted coconut, wooded almond smoke, and a more refined poise on roast & slicked oak. From then on is a lingering meditation bringing it to the forested, dried Rocky Roads & the barrel’s moving execution on a non-additive, classical stout
M: Presence on the body has a saccharine narrowness, with some elevated aspects upon the start. On this account, carbonation is operationally calm, and tuneful to the blends engagement. As a result, the feel is silky, rich & velvety where aeriation offers a nuance of warmth across minutes before drifting to oxidized leather in the echo
O: The approach entertains a pastry sweetness while accepting counters from a rounded bitterness, and a deferred uptick in spice. On the whole, an exhibition without condiments, where the ability to pull a thornily layered profile across multiple levels comes with ease, upon the nursed facilitation
