Where one sees complexity, others may see conflict. And beer is not different. Teaming up with North Lime Donuts, Atrium rolls a special pastry character into their sour boy for a taste that’ll make the tastebuds say “oh boy!”
Rusty mauve and capturing a purplish hue, Blueberry White Mocha Donut Boy doesn’t exactly roll off of the tongue, but its sour, sultry, sweet and fruity scent rolls onto the senses with a vinous and pastry aroma. Jammy sweet to start, the session kicks off with berry glaze, pie filling, sourdough and soft pastry breadiness.
As the sweetness stews on the middle palate, a bracing acidity joins the portfolio of flavors with suggestions of lemon, lime, green apple, white grape and gooseberry. Dominated by blueberries, a background of white chocolate and coffee bring a hint of affogato to an unexacting ale.
Medium bodied but certainly full for sour ale, the beer strikes the difference between a refreshing sour session and a savory sipping one. An aftertaste of blueberry and coffee linger in an unusual collection of flavors in a medium length afterglow.
