Beer poured into a glass, and appears to be dark brown with a 1/2" head. Beer has artifacts from the bottle conditioning, but very little light shines thru at all. Scent is mostly caramel, but also with malt. Taste follows suit, and is an even mouthful with a very small pleasant aftertaste. Beer feels light overall, but is refreshing.

Not a bad amber beer. Dark red color with a big white head. Smell of malt and toasted caramel. Taste malty sweet with caramel and maybe nuts. Medium body.

16.9/500ml brown bottle with no date codes that I could find. 5.6% ABV
Doesn't taste like it's very fresh, but is still worth drinking. Has that old world euro flavor. I will give it 3.69/5 as it is.

Obolon Brewery "Obolon Oksamytove"
500 ml green glass bottle without production codes or freshness dating
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Claymont, DE
Notes via stream of consciousness: The body is a slightly hazy light brown that displays golden, orange, and copper colored highlights when held to the light. The head is a finger's width of creamy light tan colored foam. There are no hops found in the aroma but the malt is grainy, lightly toasty, and subtly caramelish. The flavor follows with the addition of some minor herbal hops, a delicate raisin-like fruitiness, and a suggestion of cocoa powder. A moderate bitterness balances it nicely and it finishes dry. The alcohol is listed at just 5.6% ABV so there's no influence from that going on. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, moderate carbonation. In my opinion this is one of the best beers from Obolon.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a deep reddish-brown color with a one finger head of off-white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, fading slowly to leave a touch of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a lightly toasted and roasted brown bready aroma mixed with some notes of caramel and molasses. Along with these smells comes a good deal of apple cider and a bit of herb. There is a touch of coffee and a bit of char rounding it all out rather nicely.
Taste – The taste begins with a brown sugar and caramel sweetened brown bread taste. The roast is a bit thin, but present none the less. Other flavors of harvest fruits and molasses are there as well, adding even more to the sweet. A little bit of nut and herb are there as well, with both getting a touch stronger as the taste moves forward. At the same time there is a touch of coffee that develops, adding a bit more bitterness to help offset some of the sweet. Unfortunately, the roastines gets even weaker, leaving one with a sweeter, lightly roasted taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew was medium in thickness and creaminess with an average carbonation level. For the style and the tastes, the feel was pretty decent, blending the sweet and light roast rather well, while making it very easy drinking.
Overall – OK, but nothing more. The roastiness was a bit weak and the sweet a bit too much. Not bad, but nothing exceptional either.

Jan. 2010: 500 ml green bottle, a gift from my son Steinar, bought in Poland. ABV is 5.3%. Dark brown colour, big to moderate beige head. Rather boring aroma of malts and brown bread with some "boiled" notes, hints of caramel. Fairly nice flavour of malts with notes of rye bread and lots of caramel, but the beer is not too sweet. A hint of burnt malts and burnt sugar in the finish, with very moderate but noticeable hops. Pleasant to drink.

500ml bottle (no visible date) poured into 12oz tulip. Poured a cloudy dark brown color with with just a thin cap of tan head that low retention and no lacing.
The aroma was all sweet malt, with a very low hop presence.
Same on the tongue, with some caramel showing up too.
The body was medium-full, smooth, had OK carb, and had a sweet finish.
Drinkability was was OK, I might grab another sometime.
Overall, an OK brew, worth the tick.

Bought at Binny's Lincoln Park which has a large selection catering to Chicago's concentration of Eastern European immigrants. This is my first from Obolom. To help my research, Obolom is the first to have an English translation button on the website. (I've gone on at least five sites this month that only would talk to me in the Cyrillic alphabet, which is impossible for me to discern what is going on.) At any rate, I was surprised to see how much better the websites of American micro-brewers are compared to this largest of the Ukrainian macros.
Culture aside... this is a decent beer and I am glad to give a rating above its average.
Looks offer a deep ruby which, in the sunlight, seems brilliant. Smells, not so much... in fact average as I detect only malt. Tastes are balanced barely with hops, a mostly malt drink; missing interesting grassiness. Enough bubbles to keep the palate from seeming sweet.
Since I am someone who wants even a lager yeast to tease a dark fruity character out of dark malts, it is unlikely I would have this beer again. But that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the cultural experience.

Clear, dark brown body; thick, Sunday head. Roasted grain smell with nutty overtones. Decent, dark malt flavor; nutty with a mild cocoa profile; fair bitterness. Medium-heavy mouthfeel; warm with a sugary heft.
Overall, this is a respectable dark lager blending warm and sweet malt flavors with just a touch of bitterness.
