This relatively strong, roasty dark lager is a chocolate forward variant of the Imperial Stout. Crisper and smoother than its ale based cousin, the lower ABV and drier finish yield space for the complex malt bill.

Pint on draught at the brewery. I ordered it along with an Irish Red Ale to give it time to warm a bit. It pours a very dark cola-mahogany color with a thin, ecru-colored head and spotty lacing. When it first arrived, fairly cold from the tap, there wasn't much of a smell but as it warmed the nose opened with roasty malt, char, anise, and tobacco smoke. I was surprised by the taste. It opened with lots of fudgy chocolate but was quickly balanced by earthy bitterness, tobacco, and a hint of fruity esters. There was a dark fruit taste similar to a Russian Imperial Stout. As it warmed and settled the taste became increasingly complex and enjoyable. This lager has a good, rich body with pleasant carbonation, and the 7.5% ABV gives it lots of substance. Overall, Basis Point is a very well-crafted Baltic Porter. Don't drink this one too fast or you'll miss out on lots of complex flavors.
