Dark and significantly bitter but with little hops, this beer gets its coffee like flavor from the roasted barley. With an elevated nitrogen mix with the CO2 the "cascading effect" is a sight to behold and beer that takes time to pour and enjoy.

Pours black with three fingers of caramel colored foam. Head retention is great. Aroma is bready, nutty, toasty, earthy malts. Faint caramel, toffee, and dry chocolate behind. As a whole, the aroma leans towards dry. Flavor profile is malt forward, tagging notes of bready, nutty, toasty, and caramely malts. Toffee, chocolate, and grassy hops round out the flavor profile. It's malt lead. It's still dry as whole, but less dry than the aroma would suggest. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a velvety texture. Overall, an easy drinking stout with pleasant dry tendencies.

Served in a 15.5oz Spiegelau tulip from a 16oz can.

Pint on draught at the brewery. Served on nitro. It pours a very dark walnut - approaching black, with a super creamy, light khaki colored head and thick, creamy lacing. The nose features smoky, roasted malt, char, and tobacco ash with just a hint of coffee. True to the style, the taste opens with roasted malt and barley, along with burnt nuts. The barley provides notes of brewed coffee. As it warms in the glass there is also a hint of chocolate. It finishes with a dose of charred bitterness. The mouth feel is super creamy and lite; because it's a nitro pour there is minimal carbonation. At 5% ABV it's very easy to drink. Overall, Mackey's is a very fine Irish Dry Stout - it's flavorful and highly drinkable. One pour will not be enough. Perfect for celebrating St. Patrick's Day.

Update: 2022 release. The flavor is much bigger. I've increased my rating.
