Moderately malty with a pronounced hop bitterness that finishes fairly dry. Lighter in color and not overly bitter this style was initially brewed in the gold rush era on the west coast. Hops: Northern Brewer, Cascade.

I've never had this style at a local brewery. My only previous experience was Anchor Steam, which honestly didn't impress me. Pint pour served in a pint glass. It pours a clear, dark amber color with a thick, creamy, ecru-color head and gorgeous thick lacing. It's a very attractive pour. Its smell opens with toasted bread, caramel malt, lite floral citrus, and a whiff of tobacco smoke. The taste is fabulous! Caramel, toast, and grains with earthy notes, lite fruity esters, and noticeable hop flavors. It's richer and more flavorful than I anticipated. The Northern Brewer hops provide significant bitterness. Its mouth feel is surprisingly rich for its 5% ABV. Overall, Cali Common Stock is very well-conceived and executed. It's so much better than the relatively old Anchor Steam we get here in New Jersey. I'm very impressed with this beer and commend Bull N Bear for brewing it!
