Pours a dirty straw color with little to no head. Aroma of smoke and butter. In the taste, smoke and a bit of far away tartness, along with some buttery flavor. Smoke and wheat, perhaps a hint of lemon citrus. This is a decent lichtenhainer. Interesting but not the best of its class.

When I heard Troegs and Church Brew works were collaborating on a lichtenhainer, it immediately went on the must try list. I enjoy a well made lichtenhainer even though they are a bit obscure and not officially categorized on this site. A "smoked berliner" is about the most simple explanation I can give for the style.
This one was on tap at the Church brew works and served in a standard pint glass. It appears a hazed yellow color with a white fizzy head that maintains a thin film from rising bubbles of carbonation. A swirl is hard pressed to reformulate a finger back to the surface.
The aroma contains plenty of smoke character that is not bold by any regard. It is easily approachable with a mild phenolic hint suggestion plastic or Pete. A faint fruity underlying of lemon is also present but that is stretching it.
The taste is initially smokey and phenolic as the aroma suggests but it gets wheaty with a fresh grain flavoring as well. There is no real lemony lactic quality presence even though there are trace of it in the nose. It does display a faintly tart quality typical of many wheat beers.
This is a light bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is not terrible by any stretch but it isnt that good either. If you have never had the style before, this would be a decent introductory brew but it leaves a lot to be desired. Hats off to these folks for attempting this.

This is NOT a Berliner Weisse. I am listing it as such because lichtenhainer is not a style choice available here.
This is my first lichtenhainer. I have no experience on which to judge this beer. It is mildly tart and sour. Much more on the backend with a minimal and not overly intrusive amount of it coming. Kind of seems pretty pale ale-ish really. And I guess that would be my take from this: kind of a mashup of a pale and with a minimal amount of berliner weisse thrown in as well. A nice smooth and easy drinker. Good for a warm day.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
