an okay mexican lager here, nothing special about it, malty as these go, beyond a little earthy corn sweetness, it seems to have some bready pils character as well, and drinks a little heavy and less refreshing than i hoped it would, but the substance isnt necessarily a bad thing, im just not sure it quite does what the style generally is supposed to in terms of drinkability and such. they had a fair few lagers in here but some of them were pretty odd in the ferment and this one is too, like it should be more crisp and dry, it doesnt have that snap, and the actual flavor of the lager yeast is kind of whack, tired or something, not quite oxidized but almost a bit sweaty, distracting rather than neutral or enhancing, and in a beer thats supposed to be a pounder, it presents like a flaw. the malt depth is actually pleasant to me, crackery and rounded out nicely, and its the main element because the hops are light, there is no lime or anything in it, and its otherwise simple. fuller feeling, some corn taste to it, i think they start from a good place, but the overall execution here is suspect, especially the ferment. not bad, but i wouldnt choose this over what else is out there in this style, which was sort of the theme across a number of the beers here, just not quite standing out from the best in the region...
