473 mL can from the LCBO; dated May 26 2021 and served slightly chilled. Electrolytes, eh? Well, I suppose they *are* what plants crave.
Pours a hazy, translucent golden-orange colour, capped off with nearly an inch of foamy, soapy white head that fades in three to four minutes. A beautiful, doily-patterned swath of lacing is left behind, as well as a generous collar surrounding a filmy, bubbly cap - looks fantastic to me. Hints of black currant on the nose, alongside bready pale malts, yellow Gatorade and a faint grassiness.
A plain, inoffensive, lightly fruited golden/blonde-type ale - I'm tasting plenty of bready pale malts and some oat sweetness, with hints of lemon and blackcurrant interspersed throughout. A little grassy towards the back end; low bitterness, with a weakly doughy, blueberry muffin-y sweetness lingering into the aftertaste. The saltiness is not a major player, but it's there if you look for it. Light in body, with moderately lively carbonation that tickles the palate continuously; feels a little frothy, but also quite smooth and poundable.
Final Grade: 3.74, a B. I wasn't expecting much out of Rally's Trail Blazer, but it turned out to be a perfectly serviceable light-ish session ale that I had no real objections to. The blackcurrant addition is just about right I'd say, adding another dimension to the flavour profile without ever really being the undisputed center of attention. The base golden ale is nothing spectacular, but it gets the job done and I'd never turn this one down in the future. Worth a spin if you're in the market for something lighter and not hop-focused.
