473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Sep 29 2022 and served slightly chilled. The label brags that this beer contains electrolytes (see also: 'what plants crave'), and describes it as a session lager, which it seems to me is nothing more than a redundant marketing term for 'light beer'.
Pours a clear, pale straw yellow colour, capped with one finger of loose, soapy white head that fades within two or three minutes' time. A half-inch swath of uneven lace is left behind, in addition to a thin collar and filmy cap - looks good for a light lager. Not a whole lot on the nose - grains and corny cereal, with hints of brine.
It's a passable light beer - the sea salts are discernible, but fail to raise this brew much above average. It tastes grainy, with corny cereal sweetness bringing up the rear; mild suggestions of saltiness appear near the finish, fading into a grainy cereal aftertaste that quickly dissipates. Light in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that lends a little bit of crispness to this lager's smooth, somewhat slick mouthfeel. Effortless to pour down the hatch; several of these in a row wouldn't present much of an obstacle.
Final Grade: 3.63, a B grade. Rally's Backcountry Session Lager isn't anything to write home about, but if you're looking for something light and thirst-quenching, you could certainly do worse. In all fairness, this is a style where my expectations are pretty low, so even an objectively mundane brew such as this ranks pretty solidly when compared to the bulk of the alternatives. I suppose if you're a calorie-conscious beer consumer, this is worth taking a flyer on, but it's not something I plan to return to any time soon.
