This pilsner is brewed in the German tradition with a drastic departure: we exclusively used NZ hops in the kettle and as a dry hop. This batch features motueka, waiti, and pacifica hops. Our Precipice Pils has an initial hint of sweetness followed by a light bitterness and bright, fruity finish courtesy of a dry-hop of New Zealand Hops.

AROMA: Grassy, Citrus

BODY: Medium, Golden, Soft

TASTE: Citrus, Pine, Balanced Bitterness

FINISH: Cereal & Diffused Bitterness

Pours an unfiltered straw gold with a bold pillowy head that leaves scattered lacing as the beer is enjoyed.

Cereal on the nose, a light pine note, lemon and some grassy elements mingling together. There is an indistinct tropical note as well.

Taste follows with a more noticeable cereal quality, some grassy/herbal notes and a more distinct citrus hit. There is a solid bitterness that lingers after the finish.

Lighter bodied with a strong effervescence. Enjoyable.

This was a great Pilsner experiment. I tend to enjoy experimental hop combinations in a solid Pilsner. This was among the better I’ve tried and would gladly try again any time.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From Small Batch Dispatch's March curation. Canned February 9/26. My 18th beer from the Kingston, Ontario brewery, and 4th for 2026. Audaciously and highly regarded by Sundae the cat...

473 mL can from the Toronto Brewing 2021 advent calendar; dated Nov 10 2021 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a clear golden-yellow colour, capped with an inch of soapy, foamy white head that melts off within several minutes' time. A wavering curtain of lace is left hanging above a frothy collar encircling a filmy cap; looks good to me. It smells of cereal grains, bready malts and grassy hay, with hints of spicy, herbal hops and very mild citrus zest.

A decent-tasting pils - clean, grainy pilsner malts and bready sweetness at first, joined by grassy, spicy noble hop flavours not long afterwards. Subtle hints of lime zest and earthy/herbal bitterness at the finish, lingering into a grassy aftertaste that dries out after a moment or two. Light in body, with moderately crisp carbonation that gives a proper bite to this smooth-drinking, highly sessionable pils. This is not an exciting beer, but I'd happily drink it all night, one after another without complaint.

Final Grade: 3.89, a worthy B+. Precipice is a quality pilsner that I enjoyed from start to finish, and would certainly encourage other lager-loving BAs to seek out and try. It's described as a NZ pils, but the hops are mostly noble in character, as would be typical of any German pils. I guess there's a hint of something citrusy, but they could've just as easily left it at 'pils', forgoing any added expectations that might come with the kiwi appellation. A fine beer, one I'll hopefully return to again.
