I visited Cafe Abseits in Bamberg on 22SEP11 and started out with a bottle of this Tripel, for €7.00. menu said it was aged 3 months on american oak, uses a Trappist T58 yeast and "Kandi Zucker", and has 30 IBUs.
Poured into a Weyermann snifter, it was a dark golden color, bordering on light peach. Topping things was a thin, wispy-fine, off-white later of bubbles, mostly rim-clingers. Aroma has tropical fruit, with some melon and perhaps tangerine. Medium in body, this Tripel was fairly smooth.
Some honeyish sweetness appears, with the candy sugar evident as well. Lots of fruit is present, such as mango, pear and a little subtle apricot and pineapple. It felt a touch "hot", and it was quite dry in the finish. Pretty good, all-in-all. Prosit!

500ml swingtop bottle acquired in the Weyermann "Fan Shop" after an English language tour. Cost was 2.50 euro plus a 2.50 euro "pfand" (deposit) which you get back when you return the bottle to the brewery. Reviewed live. Poured into a Kitzmann Weissbier glass.
A: Four finger head of nice cream, decent thickness, and generally good retention. Semi-transparent copper colour.
Sm: Very light scent of just hops. Impossible for me broken nose to detect. Slight tepache scent that I didn't pick up until me missus let me know.
T: Unfermented sugar, alcohol, a sweet slight-faux-ester finish, caramelized malt. So damned sweet on the finish - feck's sake. It's been a semi-consistent feature of this brewery's beers that they have unfermented sugar in them. Poorly built for the style. Not really balanced either. I'm pretty disappointed.
Mf: Smooth, wet, and not particularly complementary of the style or the beer.
Dr: Unnecessarily high ABV for a low quality overambitious, fail beer. Leave this one in the fan shop. It's best described as a failed experiment. Maybe that's why they call it the 'pilot brewery'. High price by Bamberg standards.
