Growler filled today at the Newark, DE location poured into a snifter

A- A clear copper color with a two finger white head.

S- Hops and rye, getting pine and resin from the hops, touch of citrus, rye, sweet caramel malts.

T- Like the nose, but rye stands out more. Rye, earthy spices, and citrus hops up front with a nice pine and resin hop finish and a nice caramel malt backbone.

M- Smooth, somewhat creamy, medium body.

O- I really enjoy this beer and think it is a really good rye beer. I am wondering if the Newark Iron Hill changed this up some because I am not getting some of the same tastes as the other two reviews. I can't wait tot finish the growler and I might pick up another soon.

On tap @ Iron Hill Phoenixville (Phoenixville, PA) on 10/9/11. Served in an oversized mug.

Pours a hazed coppery amber, with a creamy covering of bright-white colored head. This retains with some foamy edging and leaves back a foamy cascade of lace that hangs in thick swathes down the sides of the mug. The aroma smells floral and spicy, with a sweet and sticky twang of citrus, caramel, and cocoa underneath. A slight roastiness sits in the back of the nose as well. Rye is present throughout, adding an additional light sour tang to the proceedings. This actually works rather nicely with the malts in particular here.

The taste is green citrus, sweet caramel, and then roasted chocolate malts across the back. Like the nose, the rye sits throughout, adding a lightly spicy and souring twang to the profile and seems to mostly adhere to the sweetness that is present (which is in abundance). Rye and hops mostly finish this, with a dry and spicy finale that sticks to the tongue a bit. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a softer and creamy feel up front that then tightens up and lays more of a prickle down along the back of the palate as you swallow. Alcohol is nicely hid here and helps with the overall drinkability of this.

I had just missed this one last summer at the brewpub, so I was happy when we randomly stopped in here again over the weekend and saw that it was back on. And it’s not a bad Roggenbier at all. I found the taste to be a little overly sweet at times, which combined with the higher ABV to hold the drinkable nature of this down a bit but there was enough crispness lent to this by the hop profile to make sure that things didn’t get out of hand. This had a flavorful rye presence. I’m just not sure if I needed 20 oz of it on this occasion.

A - Murky deep amber with a thin off-white head that has decent retention and spotty lacing down the glass.

S/T - Fruity, banana esters dominate aroma and taste. I only get a hint of grassy, lemon zest hops, with hints of dark fruit and chocolate emerging as the drink is consumed. Rye spiciness comes through in the finish.

M - Light to medium body, nice and smooth across the palate, finishes clean with little bitterness.

O - My first roggenbier, so I'll see how it stacks up against some of the others. I enjoyed it, and would get it again.
