355 mL can from the brewery; coded B297 and served barely chilled. Listed at 5%.
Pours a deep chestnut brown colour with crimson red highlights. More than two fingers of fluffy, khaki-coloured head erupts from the surface, slowly receding down to a crater-pocked-cap; a generous collar of creamy froth is also left behind, in addition to a luscious coat of lace. Looks great, but the aroma is quite subdued, offering up hints of cocoa powder, toffee and chocolate milk, along with a slight metallic twang.
It's a solid stout. Roasted malt-derived flavours of dark chocolate and cocoa dominate, though there's also some sponge toffee sweetness in there. Milk chocolate crops up mid-sip, but the profile quickly doubles back for a moderately bitter finish of baker's chocolate, earthy hops and coffee grounds. Medium in body, with middling carbonation that softly tickles the tongue, making for a smooth, slightly frothy mouthfeel. Great drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. Sometimes I just want to drink a regular, plain ol' stout - one that doesn't have coffee, or vanilla, or cacao nibs; one that wasn't aged in barrels or any of that fancy crap. Dreams fits that profile perfectly: the roasted malts are allowed to express themselves without interference, and the end result is a pretty darn solid stout - and at only 5%, this also has some session potential. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way for more, but I'd be delighted to drink it again some day.
