Classic West Coast vibes in a glass. Firefly pours a gorgeous dark orange with a perfect bitter bite balanced by just enough sweetness. We're talking grapefruit pith, pine resin, and a kiss of nectarine. It's everything you want from a traditional West Coast IPA. Beautiful.

Leading an outing of The Responsible Beer Drinking Club at The Cookie Bar on Drouillard Rd. in nearby Windsor; on tap and chilled, 4oz. in a flight of six beers. My 8th beer from the Picton, Ontario brewery, and 7th for 2025...

473 mL can from the brewery; coded B299 and served barely chilled.

Pours a foggy golden-orange colour, sporting nearly two fingers of thick, foamy, off white-coloured head that lasts for well over five minutes. A pitted, quarter-inch cap of creamy suds lingers for another five, with a fantastic full coat of lace deposited as it recedes - this is a gorgeous pale ale. Bready malts, lightly toasted grains and caramelized sugars on the nose, in addition to hints of stone fruit, grapefruit and piney, dank, earthy hops.

A very tasty Westie - the bitterness is substantial, without being overwhelming. Grapefruit, orange peel, brown sugar, toasted bread and nectarine flavours are all present early on, joined by hints of pine resin and berries by mid-sip. Finishes with earthy, resiny hop bitterness, citrus pith and stone fruit juiciness; a hint of peppery spiciness persists into a bittersweet aftertaste. Medium in body, with average carbonation that lends some bite to this brew's smooth, slick mouthfeel. Great drinkability; I could crush these one after another.

Final Grade: 4.12, an A-. Like a tiny winged insect zigzagging through a bush in the dark, Slake's Firefly threads the needle perfectly. It's bitter, but not aggressively bitter. It's got a firm, robust malt backbone that adds depth, but the hops are still allowed to dictate the pace - and sure, I'm a little biased, because Westies are my jam, but those resiny West Coast hop flavours are simply bangin'. I don't expect to see Firefly available in local LCBOs, but if it were, I'd be buying it on a weekly basis.
